Dr. Gutwein was born in Germany in 1947 and came to the U.S.A. at the age of three. He graduated from New York University with honors in biology and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa for his academic excellence. He attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center. He went on to receive his training in Gastroenterology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Medical Center in Manhattan. Dr. Gutwein completed his training in 1978 and began his practice of gastroenterology in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Dr. Robert Sable joined Dr. Gutwein in 1981 forming Riverdale Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases.
Dr. Gutwein is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the subspecialty Board of Gastroenterology. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Medical Society of the State of NY and the Bronx County Medical Society.
Dr. Gutwein is on the staff of Montefiore Medical Center, St. Barnabas Hospital, and Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center.
Dr. Gutwein enjoys teaching medicine to his residents, fellows, and his sons who are also physicians. He enjoys his hobbies of building electronic circuits and woodworking.
